Fabulous, Functional & Frugal Fashion Tip #27

Date Night Style Emergencies 101

Picture this, after months of playful flirting back and forth you’ve finally gotten the courage to ask your neighbor down the hall out on a date at a popular jazz club in the city. He said “yes” now it’s a mad dash to the beauty salon to get hair and nails done.

After you’ve been beautified, you carefully select the perfect outfit, black midi pencil skirt, off the shoulder white top, strappy black heeled sandals, teardrop post earrings, bracelet, crossover bag, and white cane. Now the fun begins as you transform into the glamorous, enchanting creature residing inside you. Then 10 minutes before “Go Time” the unthinkable happens…

On the way to do one last makeup check you trip over Fluffy, your adorable little rescue mutt. Landing with a thud on the bedroom carpet not only did you snag a fingernail, you’ve lost the back to one of your earrings, your top is slightly askew, and worse yet your black skirt is now covered in Fluffy’s white hair. Drat!

With no time to waste you hurriedly grab your emergency kit and get to work. The lint remover sheets do a remarkable job getting rid of the dog hair on the skirt. Next, you pick up your missing earring find the tiny hypoallergenic earring back, reinserted the post and secure with the clear back. Using the double-sided tape on the inside of your top ensures it will remain in place.

The miniature emery board makes quick work on the snagged fingernail but as time counts down, because everyone knows women don’t sweat, your underarms begin glistening. Not to worry though, your kit has adhesive garment shields. Yet another emergency averted.

Two minutes left before your dates comes a calling you’re finally standing at the bathroom mirror applying your mineral veil to set your makeup and none too soon as you hear a knock at the door. Snatching your white cane, and bag (complete with the emergency kit) you glide to the door appearing cool as the proverbial cucumber.

When you open the door standing before you is the man of your dreams. Taking his proffered arm the two of you head to the car. Once you’re belted in and he prepares to start the car he gazes at you then slightly bends his head as you part your lips and you hear him gently whisper “you’ve got something on your top.” Hmm, you didn’t see that coming but no worries because you’re prepared with your Tide To Go in your emergency kit.

Fashion Emergency Kit in a pink and white square tin with photo of a woman holding a phone and a speech bubble saying "Call 911 its a fashion emergency"When I was young I used to dream of becoming a spy. TV shows like The Saint, The Avengers, Mission Impossible and later James Bond movies fanned the flames of my desire for espionage.

By the time MacGyver came along in 1985 I was completely smitten with the idea of being a secret agent. I mean who couldn’t like MacGyver? He could defuse a bomb with a paperclip and a piece of chewing gum for crying out loud.

I love gadgets, especially tools like pen and flash drive audio recorders, spy cameras in clocks, eyeglasses, watches, light switches and electrical outlets. Then you have your safes in everyday ordinary items like candles, spray bottles, and lamps. Hiding in plain sight, I can attest to this working because I’d do it to my kids when they were little all the time.

Did you know there are websites dedicated to spy gear? Hmmmm, maybe this is my once in a lifetime opportunity to become that super spy I’ve always dreamed about. Who would think a mature lady with a white cane could be a spy? I think it’s a perfect plan.

By now with all this talk about a spy career and the tools of the trade you’ve probably surmised that I’d be a fan of lifehacks and you would be correct. Lifehacks if you don’t know are uncommon solutions to common problems.

So when I come across a solution to, say, a gap in my blouse, slipping bra straps, a hem that needs fixed, or how to wear a tee or cam bra-less (especially if the solution is attractively packaged) well, I feel the need to share this information.

Enter Hollywood Fashion Secrets

I felt like a little kid on Christmas morning when I got my Fashion Emergency and Stylette Kits. The kit comes packaged in a cute tin and contains the following items:

  • Hollywood Fashion Tape – double-sided clear tape
  • Deodorant Removing Sponge – sponge for removing deodorant, makeup or powder smudges from clothing
  • Sewing Kit – needle, 4 colors of thread, 2 buttons and 1 safety-pin
  • 2 Instant Buttons – self-adhesive on the backs of the buttons
  • Lint Removing Sheets – just like lint rollers only in 3 by 3 sheets
  • Hypo-Allergenic Earring Back – clear rubber back
  • Hair Band – clear rubber band
  • Nail File – small emery board
  • Blister Pad – 1 round pad
  • Stain Wipe – pre-moistened wipe
  • Shoe Shine Sponge – for spiffing up shoes from scratch marks
  • Vial of Static Guard

Fashion Emergency Tin Contents

The two kits are very similar however the Stylette kit comes in a cute little zippered pouch. It also contains No-Show Concealers, Bra Converting Clip, garment shields, eye makeup corrector/removers and a leather wipe instead of a shoe shine sponge. All the other contents are the same as in the Emergency Kit.

A few observations on the contents of the kits.

  1. The Hollywood Fashion Tape though a little difficult to handle (it’s pretty sticky) works great. I wore a blouse the other day that gapped just a little but the tape held it together nicely.
  2. Since I didn’t sew much prior to losing my vision (yes, there are people who are blind who also sew) this cute little kit would be a serious exercise in frustration for me so it’s a no-go.
  3. The lint removing sheets are fabulous. Since Mollie is blond and I like wearing black these sheets pick up her hair as well as stray lint.
  4. The No-Show Concealers (shaped like a 4-leaf clover with adhesive on the back) are used to create a smooth appearance (that’s code for de-perkifying nipples) and they work very well.
  5. I haven’t had the opportunity to use the other items but I’m confident I’ll get use out of the deodorant remover pad, garment shields, earring back, stain wipe, nail file and the static guard. The other item I bought separately is breast lift tape for the few times when a bra isn’t required (quite honestly since I never advanced much beyond training bra size) you’d be surprised that even small breasts can sag (pathetic, I know). At any rate the tape, similar to the fashion tape, is very sticky and thin, these worked well for me.

No Show Concealers and Breast Lift Tape

The Hollywood Fashion Secrets solutions aren’t just limited to the two kits I’ve talked about today. They have silicon cover-ups, perfume atomizers and other fashion hacks.

Gee Steph, this is totally awesome news but where can I get them? I’m glad you asked, you can get them at Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Forever 21, Zappos, QVC, Beauty.com, Amazon and others.
