ABBY’S CORNER | NDEAM
It’s Time To C-E-L-E-B-R-A-T-E!!!
What are we celebrating you ask? October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)!
Have no idea what this is? Here is a brief summary from our very own U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Disability Employment Policy: “Held each October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is a national campaign that raises awareness about disability employment issues and celebrates the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities.”
This year marks not only the 75th observance of NDEAM, but also the 30th anniversary of the ADA. Both milestones are being commemorated with a range of events and activities centered on the theme “Increasing Access and Opportunity.”
Increasing Access and Opportunity

Ya’ll, know I have my fun fashion side, but the advocate in me not only wants to honor but take a real hard look at the theme, “Increasing Access and Opportunity.”
With all the barriers to employment in the disability community I find myself asking this question, “Why is our unemployment rate still the lowest un-tapped pool of innovative talent?” I meet people everyday that have the drive, capabilities, and passion for an inclusive environment, yet, they are not working or are in positions with little to no upward mobility. In 2020, this should not be the case.
I know you’re thinking WOW, Abby!! This is not much of a celebration! I promise I am getting there with a twist, but like any party, I cannot do it alone. We need to come together and show how we are rocking our careers, advocacy, and ideas! With this, party with me! Comment on this post with a pic or story that highlights companies, individuals, communities, even shopping where we can showcase inclusion and innovation! I am going to call on you now to share and VOICE and your PASSIONS, as we are not meant to do this alone. We need one another more than ever!
Let’s go and comment on the beauty that is the heart of the people we are and go with the theme “Increasing Access and Opportunity!”
I can’t wait to celebrate with you. Together we are going to be heard and make a positive change! At the end of the day, we are all people, and we are valuable.
