My Hobby Is My Business
Every time I meet a woman who is blind or vision impaired (VI) and who also shares my passion for fashion, beauty, and style with an emphasis on empowerment I get so excited I feel like my heart will explode. Well, maybe not explode because that would probably kill me I think but you catch my drift.
Portia Mason is a lovely young woman I met on social media who after our initial exchange of pleasantries when I asked what her hobbies were she said: “My hobby is my business.” A woman after my own heart, while Portia values entrepreneurship she understands living a good life requires balance and during off times she enjoys crafts, reading, cooking, and listening to music. It’s my pleasure to introduce you to Portia.
To set the stage for this article I developed Congenital Glaucoma at birth but later lost my sight completely when I was 14 years old. I graduated college with a 2-year degree in Business Administration and planned to continue my education in a university to acquire my degree in Business Management.
Shortly after graduating in 1993, I began working off and on as a Medical Transcriptionist over the course of several years. Eventually, I was rehired to serve in a different capacity as General Office Assistant. After leaving this position I changed course and went back to school with a career choice of Spanish interpretation.
Currently, I am back in school working on my Certification in Drug and Alcohol Counseling and taking a class through The Hadley Institute for the Blind and Visually Impaired. While my education keeps me busy I couldn’t resist the opportunity to become an entrepreneur especially since I enjoy meeting and helping others. So these days I am up pretty early in the morning and don’t fall asleep till around 11 in the evening.
Helping people and assisting those who are searching for part-time or full-time opportunities is one of the main reasons why I chose to become an independent business owner. Also, because my mom had Lupus for a number of years, helping the Lupus Foundation by giving back to the community through my proceeds was another motivating factor.
While I cannot get into specifics in this forum, I can tell you that the company has been around for almost sixty years. It is number one around the world and has helped millions of people to do something that is so simple and is a way for them to become financially free or just make enough to get by.
Our products are made from plant sources. We have three categories: 1) vitamin supplements and nutrition, 2) skincare for both men and women, 3) laundry and cleaning care that is biodegradable and hypoallergenic.
