Editor’s Note

In honoring my major goal of improving my advocacy efforts within the beauty space, today I’ll share my thoughts in a review on Adore Me. Adore Me is an online lingerie brand that also sells swimwear, sleepwear, and activewear. I was so excited to find this company because I’m in the process of refreshing my undergarments so I subscribed to their Elite Box. Since communicating directly with the companies I contact, for this particular review, I’ve included the email trail between me and one of the representatives.

Mission

Adore Me’s mission to simply be here for our customers – to respond to our customers and try to serve them as best we can. It’s why we were the first brand to offer extended sizing across all our products, and sell a wide range of products in a very wide range of styles and colors. We want to make sure everyone is included.

Free shipping and exchanges are always appealing to me so this was an immediate win in my book. While I typically steer clear of subscription services, depending on what’s offered sometimes I’ll sign up temporarily. I thought the style quiz was pretty thorough and due to ‘Covid pounds’ (extra weight gained through the use of food delivery services) I was especially looking forward to receiving bras that actually fit me.

I thought the pricing was reasonable and the selection of styles and sizes is pretty expansive. Another selling point for me was because of Adore Me’s mission statement, I felt they’d have a great understanding of different body types. An added bonus for me was lingerie designed by women for women.

When my Elite Box arrived the contents were neatly and packed in individual cellophane envelopes. I received 5 pieces (two bra and panties sets and a dress). Everything I received was cute but I only tried on the bras and dress.

Why I Was Disappointed

  • Unflattering fit
  • Previously worn underwear
  • Open to input on PwDs but do not have anything in place

I was so disappointed that the bras and dress didn’t fit me properly. Both bras made me appear lumpy and I felt very unsexy, is that even a word? The dress could have worked but it didn’t feel like my style and I opted to return it with everything else.

I’m not sure why I didn’t think to ask how Adore Me handled previously worn and returned panties. But as soon as I got my box I could think of little else. While I could have tried them on over leggings just the thought of pre-worn underwear made me want to break out in hives.

After trying on the dress I took a picture of the items in their respective envelopes, packed it back in the box, then returned it to Adore Me. I also canceled my subscription then sent an email to the company to ask them a couple of questions.

My Overall Opinion

I like the idea of being able to purchase undergarments and lingerie online, having it shipped to try it on, and then if it doesn’t work, returning it. The free shipping/exchange makes this process easy.

I also think, Adore Me has the potential to become a valuable service for people with disabilities. A virtual stylist specifically trained to assist people with disabilities would be an amazing option. Like any company, especially when it comes to accessibility, inclusion, and representation there is always room for improvement and in my opinion, it begins with the mission.

Words are powerful and used in a certain way can build up or tear down. Adore Me’s mission states “We want to make sure everyone is included.” While people with disabilities weren’t on their radar (see emails below) I hope this will change going forward.

Regarding pre-worn panties, I was advised in the emails that Adore Me has strict policies in place to safeguard their customers. Unfortunately, the panties I received did not have liners in them and I never received an answer as to why this happened.

I canceled my subscription but think you offer a valuable service for members of my community. I am a blogger and advocate for people who are blind/low vision. I’d love to write about your service on www.boldblindbeauty.com but need to know how you handle undergarments that were previously tried on. After I received my box I felt nervous at the thought of trying on underwear that someone else may have tried on before me. Before I recommend your company to my readership I need to know the answer to my inquiry and if Adore Me has worked with other members of the disability community. Please advise. Thank you!!

I see that you have a question related to items that were sent back and previously turned on. I’m here to assist you.

We obsess over every detail to make sure Adore Me sets returns are 100% sanitary and products remain in perfect condition. We know that if we mess this up, this entire service will not work.

Adore Me has vast experience in how to safely manage the return and exchange process.

Every product undergoes a thorough multiple-point inspection when it comes back to our logistics center. It’s why we built our own warehouse from scratch – to build the facilities that could handle lingerie returns, specifically.

Each product has its own safeguard. You’ll notice panties have a plastic liner that if tampered with, will not be eligible for exchange. Bras have their own procedures different than babydolls different than sleepwear, etc. Again, these processes were built over the past decade of specializing in online lingerie sales.

Our dream for our customers is to make shopping for intimates as comfortable as possible, so we launched try-at-home.

We know that this is a completely new experience for customers, so we’re here for it to make sure everyone’s concerns are met.

Hello Clarita,

Thank you for responding to my email. Okay, here’s the thing, the two sets of panties I received did not have a plastic liner. Because I didn’t feel comfortable trying them on I didn’t because there wasn’t anything within my box to let me know that they were safe. As I indicated I’ve already canceled my service and the box is sealed and ready to go to the post office hopefully today.

I’m really disturbed to have received underwear that could have been previously worn (tried on by someone else) and cannot provide Adore Me with a satisfactory review in this area. Also, you didn’t answer my question about working with customers who identify as having disabilities, is this something you do? Please advise as I’d like to be able to share with my community that Adore Me could potentially be a service they might want to try provided the underwear is sent out with protective liners.

Please advise about the disability community.

  1. Thanks for the review. I can not imagine buying a bra online, unless it is a brand I’ve worn before and thus know the fit and line. I like the convenience of online shopping but have read several articles about the waste that goes on with returns. Many returns are just sent to the dump and this is adding hugely to an unsustainable situation. Amazon is notorious for this…..offering free returns then not re-stocking the merchandise.

    1. Yeah, waste is a problem all around especially as it relates to fast fashion. I only lrecently found out that when bio-degradeable products are mixed with regular garbage they don’t break down as they are intended to and instead cause greenhouse gases. I’ve been trying to find a way to compost or find a community compost site and I’m not having any success. It’s so frustrating not being able to do the right thing. But to your point about these returns being sent to the dump, this is troubling.
