Christine, Marta & Ryan Participants In Our Virtual Work Experience Initiative

Editor’s Note:

Giving back to the community is important to Bold Blind Beauty. One way we are doing this is by helping our youth develop transferrable skills to assist them in their prospective careers. As an inclusive and diverse organization, we understand the importance of providing quality opportunities for our future leaders. This summer we are delighted to have three student interns join our Virtual Work Experience Program. Among other duties, some of their interesting tasks include:

  • creating a database
  • hosting a recent Bold Blind Beauty On A.I.R. Podcast episode
  • interviewing a guest for an upcoming podcast episode
  • developing and implementing a social media strategy
  • each intern is running a BBB social media platform
  • upcoming panelist event with the ACB (American Council of the Blind)
  • building their networks through our community

We are super excited to introduce you to our three amazing student interns. These dynamic individuals have unique stories which are being shared through our platform. Ryan was our July Man In Motion, Marta will be our July Monthly Beauty and we will be featuring Christine in an upcoming edition. What makes these interns extraordinary is each of them in their own way has a heart for advocacy and giving voice to those with disabilities.

We look forward to having more interns join us in the future. In the interim, my request to you is to please consider giving interns with disabilities an opportunity to make your organization shine.

Christine

Christine Bharosi, is an incoming graduate student at Fordham University. Like the other interns, she also has a background in psychology because of her bachelor’s degree from Lehman College. She’s currently working to become a cybercrime analyst and has gained a new passion for data. 

In September, she’ll be starting her first master’s degree. It’s a new challenge, for her but she’s excited to tackle it. When Christine is not studying, her hobbies include gaming, reading, and watching movies. She’s excited to be working with Bold Blind Beauty and hopes to gain new perspectives as well as practical experience to take her skills even further.

Marta

Marta DiVito is an advocate for people with disabilities. She’s currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in communication from Purdue University Global. 

Marta is so excited to be working with a company like Bold Blind Beauty, this summer. She’s also excited to be getting hands-on work experience that will help her develop the skills she needs to one day be a communication representative for a nonprofit for people with disabilities because she believes that people with disabilities deserve to find their own voice.

Ryan

Ryan Maxwell is an avid reader and also comes from a psychology background. He’s going to be a neuroscience major as an incoming freshman at Binghamton University in Vestal New York. Ryan is an aspiring social worker, or maybe a clinical psychologist. 

In the fall, Ryan will be starting to work in Dr. Deborah Kreiss’s Lab doing some really interesting, research about OCD and social anxiety. He’s so excited to be working with Bold Blind Beauty because he has a great passion for helping people with disabilities just to be empowered and to strive towards a more equitable future. It’s also a great honor to be working alongside a great team of really qualified smart and talented interns.

Final Words

Here at Bold Blind Beauty, we talk quite a bit on topics surrounding accessibility, inclusion, and representation or A.I.R. One of the things that breaks my heart is when preparing posts like today’s article I cannot find authentic imagery. While the selection of images representing people with disabilities is getting better there’s still a long way to go. In every area of life, there are people with disabilities and as such we should be equally represented.

For this article, there’s no reason in my mind why I shouldn’t have been able to find photos of students with disabilities alongside students without disabilities. Instead what I found were photos of either all able-bodied students or all students with disabilities. These scenarios, while they could and do exist, they are seldom seen in real-life situations. Just something to think about.
