A Mother’s Day Walk In The Park

In Celebration of Ciarra

This is just a short post to share my experience at this year’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Pittsburgh. Approximately 20,000 people were in attendance for the 5K walk/race and while I typically shy away from crowds this was such a well-organized event that our group decided we will make this trek an annual event.

This Mother’s Day was different for a couple of reasons the main one was largely due to my cousin, Ciarra, who is battling breast cancer. Diagnosed earlier this year Ciarra, a strong young woman of faith, has shown remarkable courage as she fights this heinous disease.

People could be seen as far as the eye could see along the winding route

Peppered throughout this post are pictures of the mile markers and a few of the sights along the way. There was a touching trio of an elderly woman (survivor) walking and holding hands in between her husband and son.

God Bless the Survivors

It was so encouraging to see residents show their love and support with signs, balloons and or drinks along the route. The above image is a sign that says God Bless The Survivors and it’s surrounded by pink and white balloons.

More people on the route

While Charese and I walked along side Debbie and Lydia (Ciarra’s mom and aunt respectively) all of us were moved by the sheer number of people who came to support the cause. Among the sea of pink and white were breast cancer survivors, supporters and fighters.
