Dress Your Shape The Alluring Oval

Measuring Up To What?

You have an ample and voluptuous figure reminiscent of ancient goddesses! Your waist is fuller than your bust and hips. Your face, neck, and bust are beautifully proportionate to each other: and your slender lower legs and amazing arms accent your voluptuous assets. ~IGIGI

I love words especially when they are used in a way that is uplifting. Notice the difference in the description above in comparison with the two listed below that I found on the internet:

  1. “The apple shaped woman carries most her body fat in the abdominal region. She will generally have narrow hips, larger breasts, and a relatively large waist.”
  2. “Your have an undefined waist and a large stomach.”

Admittedly, some people may not take issue the two portrayals I’ve listed here and while there may be some truth to these depictions, personally I would prefer the more positive, poetic sounding IGIGI description. When the focus of our physical appearance is of a more negative aspect it can be hurtful and insinuate that something is wrong with us.

IGIGI Oval Body Shape Image and DescriptionWhen I come across titles like: “So, You Don’t Have The Ideal Shape” I immediately wonder what is ideal? If ideal is perfection is this something I can attain? The inevitable critique of my frame follows where I look at my flaws and think about self-improvement.

Let me say up front there is absolutely nothing wrong with self-improvement when done for the right reasons and not to gain the acceptance of others. It’s when I remember ‘gaining the acceptance of others’ that I know with certainty that my shape, in its current condition, is ideal to someone.

The point here is just about everywhere we turn our world abounds with criticism and outright hateful commentary targeting anyone and everyone who doesn’t fit within the “ideal” spectrum of {fill in the blank}. We have to remember that one person’s ideal may be completely different from another individual’s idea of perfection.

So when we talk about body shapes it is not an exact science, rather the structure of our frames generally speaking, provides a method of enabling us to pick the most flattering clothing for our figures. Even so, what works for one person who is, for purposes of this post  an oval, may not necessarily work for another. The good news is with a world full of possibilities there will always be something that works specifically for you as an individual.

Apples and Ovals

The oval body shape is often referred to as apple, diamond, and sometimes circle. Rosie O’Donnell, Oprah Winfrey, Dolly Parton, Catherine Zeta-Jones,  Queen Latifah, Angelina Jolie, and Charlize Theron and among the most famous oval frames.

Following are clothing guidelines for the oval body shape:

  • Neckline: square, scoop, and v-neck
  • Tops: v-neck, surplice, blouson
  • Dresses: A-line and empire waist
  • Skirts: A-Line and full
  • Pants: wide leg and boot-cut
  • Jackets: tailored

As with the other articles in this series of body shapes, pictured throughout  today’s post are items of clothing that are flattering to the oval silhouette. All of the clothes pictured and described below are from Nordstrom’s plus size department.

  • Calvin Klein Chain Detail Print Chiffon Halter Dress | The first word that came to mind when I saw this A-line styled dress was dreamy. The brilliant reds, corals, and oranges, mixed with white on this lovely chiffon dress creates a delightful watercolor effect that’s reminiscent of tie dye. A decorative chain is attached to the halter-inspired neckline of this cutaway shoulder dress with back keyhole closure.
  • Tart Print Surplice Bodice Dress | Another A-line, the shades of blue, gray, and white colors in this chevron patterned sleeveless, empire waist dress are calm and serene. What I like most about this dress are the deep V-necklines (front and back) and the way the gathered fabric at the empire waist creates gentle folds in the middle of the front and back of the dress that says ‘feminine’.
  • Ralph Lauren Zebra Print Wrap Dress | Wrap dresses have always been a favorite of mine because they are so flattering to most shapes. The soft neutral beige/gray of the zebra striped pattern along with the breezy chiffon and handkerchief-hem skirt adds to the charm of this surplice V-neck dress.
  • Michael Kors Bamboo Print High/Low Maxi Dress  | This figure-flattering soft jersey high/low maxi dress is so pretty with its cap-sleeves and surplice V-neck bodice. The light greenish-yellow bamboo pattern against a charcoal background is stunning and it looks as though it would be very comfortable to wear in the spring and summer.
  • Mynt 1792 A-Line Ponte Skirt | This skirt comes in three colors (blue, yellow, and black) and of course the yellow immediately caught my attention. Though the color is described as a lime/yellow it’s a nice muted tone. The full ponte skirt is structured with an attached waistband and horizontal panels.
  • Eloquii Full Midi Skirt | The true red shade of this cotton twill skirt makes a bold statement with its soft, flowy folds created by the inverted pleats.
  • Sejour Print Cotton Sateen Skirt | This cotton-sateen skirt is an A-line in a bold navy and white gingham print. The narrow waistband and front slant pockets give this skirt a swingy retro vibe.
  • Eloquii Soft Pleat Midi Skirt | A navy and light blue floral print adorns this coquettish skirt with its inverted pleats that add subtle flare.

  • Vince Camuto Pleat Front V-Neck Sleeveless Blouse | The shoulders of this V-neck sleeveless flowy crepe blouse are gathered into soft pleats. With a range of nine colors from which to choose the two that appeal to me most are the mint and light blue.
  • Vince Camuto Embellished V-Neck High/Low Top | The front of this high/low hemmed, soft knit white V-neck sleeveless blouse is embellished with silver sequins surrounding the neckline.
  • Allen Allen Slub Knit V-Neck Tunic | I picked this heathered-knit V-neck, three-quarter length sleeved tunic for its comfortable appearance and the swingy hem.
  • City Chic Wrap Front Bubble Hem Top | This halter inspired surplice styled cream-colored top has a V-neck neck, racerback and elasticized hem.
  • City Chic Smocked Palazzo Pants | Nothing says summer like a relaxed, breezy pair of palazzo pants. These black ones come in a gauzy crinkled fabric, have a wide smocked waistband and hip pockets.
  • City Chic ‘Pacific’ Print Palazzo Pants | I love the black and white sort of abstract floral print on these palazzo pants. The waistband and outer side panels of the pants are black with white/gray flowers with the front, rear and inner legs being white with black floral design. The material is a gauzy crinkled fabric.
  • Hard Tail Slouchy Knit Cargo Pants | These light gray wide-leg cargo pants remind me of comfortable joggers. Rear flap button closure pockets and front slant pockets complete the look.
  • NYDJ ‘Wylie’ Stretch Linen Trousers | Can’t have summer without a pair of white pants. These are a wide leg linen blend and come with five pockets.

  • City Chic Classic Denim Jacket | The cropped cut styling of this blue denim classic creates waist definition.
  • City Chic ‘Girlie Girl’ Jacket | The waist-defining peplum of this bright coral structured blazer is divine. In addition, the jacket has a single button closure, two front faux welt pockets, three-quarter length sleeves along with the two buttons on the sleeves.
  • Vince Camuto One-Button Blazer | This blazer comes in black or white, has a single button closure, two flap pockets with a waist welt pocket above the right flap pocket.
  • Anne Klein One-Button Blazer | A classic black tailored blazer is styled with notch lapels and flap pockets.

Embrace your shape.
