Calculating Your Shape
Your exquisite frame has exceptional balance! You have proportionate hips, balanced thighs, shapely legs, slightly fuller arms, and a body frame that’s perfectly in line with all the body parts. ~IGIGI
Last year I did a post, Is Normal Perfect, on body shapes and in the article I gave some statistics on the various silhouettes. The data included on the chart basically gave some measurements on how a person could determine their shape.
While the information was helpful I thought “there’s got to be an easier way.” And to my delight I found an online Body Type Calculator where all you have to do is plug-in your bust, waist and hip measurements, then click the “calculate” button to get a result.
I already knew I was pear or inverted triangle-shaped but just to test the calculator I put in my measurements, and almost like magic, as soon as I clicked the “calculate” button I got confirmation on my shape. As I’ve previously mentioned knowing your body shape allows you to choose clothing that is the most flattering for your frame.
An Enviable Shape
If you are a gorgeous rectangle you are among the most common body shapes. With approximately 46 percent of women in this category you’re in good company. Cameron Diaz, Nicole Kidman, Hilary Duff, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Reese Witherspoon to name a few, are among some of the most famous rectangles.
Because of your well proportioned silhouette you can wear just about any style of clothing since you do not have to minimize any specific area of the body. Prior to embracing my shape I would have given my left arm for such a symmetrical body.
Below are some general guidelines on the types of pieces best suited to the rectangular silhouette and some examples of clothing that I found online at Nordstrom. As with my other recent body shape posts, the outfits I chose focus on the curvier body and Nordstrom has a nice selection from which to choose and I like their product descriptions.
- Neckline: sweetheart, scoop neck
- Dresses: A-line, belted, empire, cinched or ruched waist
- Skirts: A-line, tulip, pencil
- Tops: cinched or belted
- Pants: straight, slight flare
- Jackets: structured
A Shopping We Will Go!
- Marina Tiered Lace Dress
Beaded lace contours the figure with crisscrossed panels wrapping the Empire bodice and tiering the pencil skirt. A bit of sheerness at the sleeves and back provides an alluring finish. Lace is still quite prevalent this year and I couldn’t resist this gunmetal (gray) dress.
- Calvin Klein Belted Textured Jersey Sheath Dress
Chartreuse (yellow) – A vivid hue pops the flattering design of a sleeveless jersey-knit sheath crafted with fine pintuck pleats that alternate with textured stitching for a sophisticated tonal design. A slender belt accentuates the waist and polishes the professional look.
- City Chic ‘Sweetheart’ Pleated Strapless Colorblock Party Dress
Black & White – A strapless bodice bares the décolletage atop an elegant fit-and-flare dress designed with volumizing tulle under the luxurious pleated-mesh skirt. Delicate black-lace appliqués enhance the sophisticated color-blocked design while a slim satin belt adds perfect polish. Of course this dress was one of my favorites because it’s black and white but also detailing that includes the black lace on top of the white bodice and the mesh skirt.
- City Chic Belted Scoop Neck Ponte Peplum Dress
Royal Blue – A scoop-neck dress gets a flirty two-piece look from a flouncy peplum bodice over a curve-hugging skirt with stretch comfort. A slender contrast belt accentuates the flattering style. Peplum styles always accentuate the waist and this dress with its slim black belt definitely fits the bill and the color is striking.
- Lucky Brand ‘Silho Vines’ Pants
White flowers popped against a black background bring a relaxed island vibe to lightweight woven pants topped with a comfortable elasticized waist and tapered to ankle-zipped hems. Again, black and white is most certainly a winner in my book and the white floral pattern on these pants is relaxed enough to wear on day outings or for an evening out on the town.
- Michael Kors Side Stripe Drawstring Pants
Prussian Blue – White stripes at the sides enhance the athletic vibe of jogger pants in a soft cotton-blend knit topped with a drawstring waist and gathered to banded cuffs. Joggers are no longer just for jogging. With the striped detail on the sides of these pants they look great with a pair of heels.
- Lucky Brand ‘Ginger’ Bootcut Jeans
Subtle fading bring an everyday feel to sleek bootcut jeans in deep blue wash. Signature stitching details the back pockets.
- Ralph Lauren Roll Hem Chinos
Essential warm-weather pants, comfy cotton chinos are styled for a slim, straight-leg silhouette with hems to roll as you please. Summer just isn’t summer without a pair of white pants. White goes with everything so it takes the stress out of what top(s) to pair them with.
- City Chic Racerback Side Drape Crepe Top
Crossover panels fluidly drape the V-neck front and sides of a breezy sleeveless top cut from brilliantly colored crepe. An inverted pleat at the racerback eases the long, slim silhouette. The purplish/blue color and racerback style got me on this top. From the front this top almost looks like a halter because of the way the straps are formed. The way the panels crossover in the front, it gives the illusion of a belted waist.
- Print Sleeveless Asymmetrical Surplice Blouse
Black & Gold – Artful pleating creates a flattering surplice silhouette and an asymmetrically draped hemline for a sleeveless mesh blouse agleam in a gilded print. Beautiful faux-wrap top is a date night or special event winner.
- City Chic Metal Belt Peplum Top
A slender belt fronted with a gleaming metal bar draws attention to the hourglass shape of a textured ponte top fitted with princess seaming before dropping to a flouncy peplum hem. A deep V-neckline and light padding in the shoulders enhance the flattering design. It’s black, it’s peplum – I would have said ‘enough said’ but the shiny belt against the black top is very chic.
- Ellen Tracy Print Cap Sleeve Wrap Top
Pleats at the V-neckline and shirring at the sides softly shape the flattering wrap silhouette of a blue and white stretch-knit top that finishes with a slimming banded hem.
- Print Crepe Moto Vest
Edgy moto styling gets a chic refresh for a stretch-crepe vest patterned in a modern monochromatic print. An asymmetrical front zip and side snap tabs at the hem authenticate the biker heritage. Being a fan of moto and jean vests this moto vest is the best of both worlds in a cream tan color that’s versatile enough to wear with pants, dress or skirt.
- Chambray Military Vest
Lightweight denim chambray with a worn and weathered look shapes a military-inspired vest styled with a stand collar and cinched waist. Classic utility details include epaulets and a quarter of bellows pockets.
- ELOQUII Belted Double Layer Vest
A white vest with modern polish is cut from silky, stretch crepe with an elegantly layered front. For waist-defining flattery, attached ties wrap in a bow in both the front and back.
- City Chic ‘Kimono Pop’ Jacket
Eye-popping orange puts this shawl-collar jacket on the not-for-the-timid list, while cuffed elbow sleeves and a waist-nipped silhouette keep the style refined. The three-quarter length sleeves, open front and bright orange color makes this jacket look comfortable to me for spring/summer.
- Mynt 1792 High Waist Moto Skirt
A fluid crepe navy pencil skirt in an elegant below-knee length is punctuated with an asymmetrical front zipper that leaves a flirty slit at the hem. A wide black faux-leather waistband is shaped to define your curves.
- City Chic High/Low Wrap Skirt
A wide, banded hem accentuates the graceful tulip styling of a black stretch-cotton skirt with sarong-inspired draping and a flirty cutaway finish.
- City Chic ‘Girly Fun’ A-Line Skirt
A spicy coral hue pops a swingy little skirt cut from a lightweight stretch-woven fabric and flared with inverted pleats.
- Mynt 1792 Cascade Drape Crepe Skirt
A floaty ruffle cascading down the wrap front of a slim crepe olive skirt adds a romantic flair to the office-ready style. A notched front hem flaunts a little bit more leg. If I can find this one in my size I will call it mine.
