Change can be a scary thought for a creature of habit. Following the same routines day after day might seem boring to some however the madness behind this thought process has its benefits.
Now that I’m over the half century mark and the ole memory doesn’t function quite as well as it used to, rituals that I’ve had in place for many years significantly decrease the likelihood of misplaced objects like keys, cell phones or money. Familiar routes that I took when I used to drive, never allowing the gas gauge to go below half a tank, being early for everything, always gave me a sense of calm. When in a parking garage or lot I was always able to find my vehicle because I would park in the same vicinity all the time.
I’ve had people in my life who thought it’d be a hoot to rearrange items in my home or on my desk at work to see if I’d notice the difference. Duh – of course I noticed because my inner calm would go haywire until order was restored.
Since I’ve lived with this quirkiness all my life it’s my normal. So no one could have been more taken aback when my heart did a little pitter patter over the cutest necklace. The pitter pat was normal what wasn’t normal was my reaction to, of all things, an owl necklace.
I love animals; although with the exception of animal print, I’ve never been inclined to wear them on my shoes, clothes, accessories or jewelry. It’s just not my thing or so I thought, until the owl.
My first owl purchase was about five years ago. I was with a couple of friends who introduced me to this tiny boutique in downtown Pittsburgh and let me tell you I thought I hit the motherload. Everywhere I turned there was sparkle. I would gravitate to a bracelet then a pair of earrings would catch my eye. I uttered so many ohs and ahs you would have thought we were at a fireworks show.
Once I settled down a bit I found this dazzling owl pendant necklace that I had to have. As I mentioned, not one to go for animal jewelry I couldn’t understand why this piece beckoned to me but it was the beginning of a personal trend.
I’ve since broken my original necklace however I’ve had a few others and just last week I found a pair of owl earrings online at shoplately.com that begged to be mine. At a price of $8.00 I was worried that my ears would become irritated but such has not been the case.
The qualities that I like most about the owl earrings are the turquoise colored stones used for the body with turquoise gems as eyes are mounted in a silver toned base. The owls are about 1 inch in length, are no bigger than my thumb and come on fish hooks.
When I was looking for the earrings I saw a number of owl pieces along with peacocks (another personal favorite), giraffes, leopards, elephants, dogs and so on. Most of the pieces I found come in silver or gold and stones are typically incorporated to give them that sparkle.
About two years ago I found a real cute owl pendant necklace at JC Penney. This used owl shaped silver toned chain mail for the body that was covered in various shades of turquoise crystal beads. The head was solid silver toned metal with eyes made of crystal rhinestones.
Along with the picture of my recent acquisition are two more (one a pendant and the other earrings). Following is a brief description of each.
- Pure Silver Plated Cubic Zirconia Fashion Owl Pendant – This adorable owl pendant is created in an open-design. The pendant is pure silver plated and sparkles with clear cubic zirconia. www.jcpenney.com
