What a magnificent July 4th!! The weather was gorgeous, to the point of being cool in part due to the low humidity. In view of this I was very comfortable wearing a ¾ sleeve length hoodie, denim capris, sneakers and ball cap all in white. There was a time in the not too distant past when I would have balked at wearing all white not because I wanted it to stay in pristine condition for as long as possible. Yesterday I wanted to wear all white even if I fell in mud pit at least there would be that initial window of time where I would look pure as the driven snow.
So when I get a text from my cousin, Chae, asking if I’d like to go to the parade with her and her granddaughter, Kaedyn, I had to control my enthusiasm. About 30 minutes later Chae comes by to scoop me up and we’re off to the parade.
It’s been decades since my last parade and I know time hasn’t stood still but things sure have changed. From the time we were kids there were always lots of fire trucks in the parade and yesterday was no different although we weren’t expecting to hear only two bands. 30 minutes after it started the parade was over and we were a little disappointed that the high school band from our alma mater did not participate – oh well.
After the parade we went to Chae’s house and since for the most part it was just her and I, instead of firing up the outdoor grill we opted for the countertop model. Hebrew National Hot Dogs, burgers from Whole Foods and a sheet cake from Kretchmar’s Bakery were on the menu. The only descriptor that comes to mind is – heavenly!! For many years I have only eaten beef hot dogs and I don’t know how the Hebrew National brand escaped my radar but as of yesterday it’s now rectified. The burgers were mouth-watering and the cake was delectable.
Around 9:30 or thereabouts we headed to the fireworks, got an excellent parking space (close to the exit so we could beat a hasty retreat after the finale) and enjoyed a great show. In Kaedyn’s own words they were “cool.”
If yesterday was magnificent then today was just glorious!! We are still experiencing low humidity with more sun than yesterday which put me in an exceptionally sunny mood so I wanted to dress accordingly.
Yellow, orange, bright orange, pink, magenta and blue were the colors of the day. My cousin gave me this divine Calvin Klein orange and yellow striped tank maxi dress that I wore with sling backs from Zara. It may seem a bit overkill but the bright orange, pink and magenta shoes worked so well with the dress that I was inclined to add my ombré blue straw floppy hat, little straw/blue striped clutch and mirrored aviator sunglasses.
I had so much fun taking these pictures that I even threw on some tunes while shooting. One of my fashion goals for this year was to be more sporty chic and not so uptight. To achieve this I had to embrace color even those that ordinarily I would appreciate but was afraid to wear. And I must say that while wearing the colors I chose for today I felt so good I was almost delirious.
Moral of the story is to be unafraid to experiment to the point of being unconventional with colors, patterns, textures and you’d be surprised how good it’ll make you feel.
